Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Work to widen the M25 to four lanes between Junction 11 (Chertsey) and 13 (Staines) is now underway.

Strengthening the hard shoulders is almost finished; this will allow northbound traffic to be diverted on to the hard shoulder, so that lane three can be closed and construction of the northbound fourth lane can start. This arrangement means three lanes will be kept open to traffic in both directions, although no hard shoulder will be available.

The diversion and closure will initially affect Junction 11 (Chertsey) to 12 (Thorpe), followed by Junction 12 to 13 later in the month. Southbound traffic will also be diverted onto the southbound hard shoulder and the third lane closed at Junctions 11 and 12. Drivers should watch out for contractors' vehicles entering and leaving the works area at these junctions.

For up-to-date information on road conditions and the progress of the scheme motorists can phone a 24-hour hotline on 011574 6844. A leaflet explaining the M25 improvement scheme and giving advice to drivers is also available by calling a 24-hour answer service on Dorking (0306) 740481.
