• Operators bidding for local authority refuse collection contracts under competitive tendering next year, could be offered vehicle maintenance contracts as well. Councils will be able to choose whether they are offered separately or together, Environment minister Christopher Chope told local government officers in London.

• Central Motor Auctions, the second biggest vehicle auctioneer in the UK, is joining the unlisted securities market. The company offered for sale about 21,000 commercial vehicles for the year to midOctober, with outside sales of 900. Pre-tax profits were 2743,000 on total sales of 68,000 vehicles. CMA has nine auction depots and plans to open another just north of London.

• Irish Hino truck assembler J Harris is set to open its parts and distribution factory in Catterick within weeks (CM 28 January-3 February), but plans for a full-blown assembly plant still seem unlikely for at least four years. The Japanese manufacturer, however, is looking seriously at plans to introduce assembly in either the UK or Iberia in the near future.

• Peugeot Talbot, UK subisidiary of the Peugeot group, has made a remarkable turnaround reporting pre-tax profit of 218.24 mil-. lion — 233 million up from its 214.93 million loss in 1986. This is a considerable improvement from eight years of total 2286 million losses between 1978 and last year.

• Express parcels carrier ANC has taken delivery of 18 trailers on contract hire from Rentco's Birmingham depot. ANC operates 40 boxvan semi-trailers on contract hire from Rentco at its Newcastle Under Lyme centre.
