• A coach driver with Smiths-Shearings, who has had a heart condition for more than six years, lost his appeal to regain his PSV driving licence before Blackburn magistrates last week. The court upheld the decision of North Western Licensing Authority Martin Albu not to renew Arthur Flockhart's licence despite evidence that he had been driving PSVs for 41 years.
In spite of his uneven heartbeat, from which he has suffered for more than six years, Flockhart argued that he was perfectly fit. His solicitor, John Backhouse, produced evidence from a GP and a consultant, both of whom felt that he should be allowed to continue as a driver.
