LONDON TRANSPORT'S representatives, clearly cobblers' children, were the last guests to arrive at the opening of Wincanton Transport's new offices on Western Avenue, near Park Royal Underground station. With courtesy typical of a Somerset-based company, Geoffrey Mitchell, sales and marketing director, suggested that they had obviously travelled by car rather than by their own services.
I arrived by Tube — on time. But, then, I knew the one-day strike of rail and bus workers was over.
