Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TIME is running out for garages which have not geared themselves up for the new MoT test, warns the Garage Equipment Association.

GEA president Stanley Cannon has said that the Association will do its best to ensure that no testing station is shut out through shortage of equipment. "But these are empty words unless garage proprietors take heed of the Dip's advice and act now," he warned.

At present, 17,000 garages are authorised to carry out MoT tests, but only 1,500 have met the new testing requirements.

Approval in principal has been given to another 9,000, but there could be as many as 4,000 of these awaiting brake testers.

Mr Canon says that the "several thousand" which have not taken action to obtain approval could be as many as 5,000.

He warns that it takes 12 months now for an application to gain approval and that this will increase to two years after October.

The Dip cannot move faster than its staffing allows, and garages should not continue to adopt a "wait and see" attitude.
