Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I would like to comment on the letter from Mr G. Smith (CM March 10).

One is presented with a situation of the kind he mentions daily when driving hgv or psv. The drivers of small vehicles (cars and vans) do not allow for the extra room required to manoeuvre a large vehicle through a roundabout. If they are alongside a vehicle and in a "blind spot", then an accident such as that mentioned by Mr Smith can easily occur.

Regarding the postage stamp-sized number plates. I drive thousands of miles around Europe every year and have yet to find a country that does not have vehicles fitted with at least rear number plates of a size similar to our own. Some front number plates are permitted to be postage stamp size, but it is the rear one which is important.

As regards the lighting standards, it is my experience that the majority of Continental vehicles, have far more lights than British ones. There are bound to be a few bad examples but so there are here in Britain.

R. N. WILLIAMS, Dudley, Worcs.
