" R.H.E. REFUSES PERMITS, THEN APPROACHES CUSTOMERS"

SPEAKING at Newport on Monday, Mr. Peter Thorneycroft, M.P„ chair:wan of the Conservative Parliamentary Transport Committee, accused the Road Haulage Executive of soliciting custom an the strength of information obtained from hattliers through requirernenis of the Transport Act.

He quoted from a letter which, he said, had been sent by the Executive to a customer, in the following terms:— " The operator referred to above made application for a permit to carry goods for you. In view of the facilities of the Executive available, it has not been possible to grant the application. With the very large organization we now operate, I am sure we can meet your needs."

Commenting on the letter, Mr. R. Morton Mitchell, chief executive officer of the Road Haulage Association, said: " As soon as the R.H.E. refuse a per7 mit, they are after customers' business."

Mr. R. Bowen. M.P., maintained that the Transport Act was unworkable in South Wales. Without exception, hauliers were unable to go from one town to another without exceeding the 25-mile limit. The Western Region, he said, fared worse than any other in permits and fuel allocations.

Two hundred free hauliers in South Wales and adjoining 'areas attended the meeting, which was convened by Mr. H. C. Parker. general manager of Newport and District Transport Co.. who presided
