Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Mercedes MBE4000/0M457 engines mentioned in the Axor report (CA/113-19 Sept). For the record the MBE4000 has a longer stroke than the 0M457, taking its capacity up to 12.82 rather than the latter's 11.97 litres.

Maximum power is accordingly higher, up from 430 to 456hp for regular Class 8 truck applications in the US, though a 507hp fire engine version is promised.

It's worth mentioning that the 0M457 has an identical bore and stroke (128x155mm) to MAN's 12Irtre in-line six, reflecting their common late-1960s MB-MAN engine joint-venture origins, while the MBE4000 shares the cylinder dimensions (128x166mm) of MAN's up-to510hp 12.8-litre lump.

It seems Mercedes doesn't

want the higher output of the 12.8 litre MBE4000 in the Axor because it might erode demand for the upcoming 460hp V6engined Actros.

Man Bunting.

Harpenden, Herts.

ie Ed: Well bow to Alan's superior knowledge but simply say that both the 0M457 and MBE4000 Series in-line six blocks come from Mercedes' Brazilian engine plant, thereby confirming their doppelganger status.
