• A battle is raging over who is responsible for removing a cargo of hazardous German waste from the yard of an Essex operator, who unwittingly carried the load on behalf of Gwent company Controlled Residue Processing (CM 6-12 September).
Essex County Council says it was assured by the Welsh company that the load, which included dangerous chemicals such as sodium pyrophosphate. would be moved "within four days" of the nature of the consignment being discovered — but 10 days had now passed and nothing had been done.
Rye Braun, a CRP director, says that most of the load brought into the UK, including the dangerous chemicals, has now been sold.
Braun expects the hazardous cargo to be moved by hauliers on behalf of the customers "as planned".
