• Police and Department of Transport officials who carry out sweeping checks on tankers are wasting their own and hauliers' time and money on finding faults of a "minor and irrelevant" nature, says tanker boss Phil Gate.
Gate, chief executive of Sadler Tankers in Teesside and chairman of the Road Haulage Association's tanker group, hit out after a 12-hour blitz on vehicles carrying hazardous goods in the North-East two weeks ago found one in four trucks had faults (CM 13-19 September).
