Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• After what seems like years in the wilderness Gardner could be on the diesel engine comeback trail with the launch of its LG1200 range. The LG1200 is the first new engine range to be developed jointly by Gardner's engineering department at Patricroft and Perkins at Peterborough, and consists of eight engines with outputs ranging from 186kW (210hp) to 261kW (350hp).

The 12-litre LG1200 is derived from the previous sixcylinder 6LXDT Gardner, but is shorter, by 115rnm, and, according to Perkins, is one of the lightest engines available in its class, and lighter than many 10-litre power units.

The new Gardner also has an updated combustion system with redesigned pistons and fuel pump giving better economy and lower emissions. There is also a new camshaft and gear-driven timing system using helically cut gears with high-contact ratios which reduce noise levels and are virtually maintenance-free.

Other features include a higher output water pump for better cooling, and extended oil change periods: 24,000km with filter changes, which is extended to 48,000Iun when using an additional centrifugal filter. An integral oil cooler is also fitted with oil galleries set into the crankcase.

Gardner will offer the LG1200 Series for both truck and bus applications with airto-air chargecooling used on engines up to 261kW (350hp) plus the option of air-to-water charge-cooling on PSV engines.

So far, few details have been revealed on which manufacturer will take the LG1200, particularly considering the success of the Eagle Tx range. ERF says that it will not rule

out the possibility of fitting the engine.

Seddon Atkinson, however, says that at the moment it has no plans to fit the LG1200.
