A neat new way of taking the heat off

AS REPORTED briefly in last week's CM, Quinton HazeII has introduced a new temperaturesensitive cooling fan.

Known as the Thermofan, it is the result of three years' work at the OH research laboratory in Colwyn Bay and wilt be shown for the first time at the Motor Show next month.

The fan is continuously driven by the conventional engine fan belt and uses the standard pump mountings requiring no more space than a standard fixed unit.

The Thermofan consists of a diecast body fitted with seven movable fan blades whose pitch angle can be altered from "flat" through a range of 30 per cent.

The hub contains a sensing device made up of three split rings constructed from a plastics material with a high rate of linear thermal expansion.

The rings are arranged concentrically and separated by steel drums coated in ptfe.

In use, some of the airflow through the vehicle radiator is drawn into the Thermofan via a filter and passed over a sensor element.
