How does an operator ;sess the best time to replace his vehicle vehicles? One answer is to study this W publication, compiled by a welliown transport consultancy. It costs 70p tst free and, as well as setting out the ctors which should influence a vehicle placement policy, it provides detailed bles showing the ideal replacement ;riod for a range of trucks from 3 tons to tons payload capacity. Subtitled "What they mean for transport operators", this new publication (95p post free) sets out the legal requirements, the costs, the choice of types available and a host of clearly written advice about what managers, drivers and traffic staff need to know about these devices. Tachographs are due to become a legal requirement on most new heavy vehicles and both new and existing hazardous-load vehicles from January 1976 and on existing vehicles from the beginning of 1978.

Interpreting the record charts to the best advantage is the subject of a whole illustrated chapter of the book, which also recounts the experience of some British operators using tachographs.
