Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Crane Fruehauf Ltd, Hayes Gate House, Uxbridge Road, Hayes, Middlesex One large stand is split into four sections to cover Highway, Boden, Multiwheeler and Crane Fruehauf and altogether there are nine semi-trailer exhibits.

A new tip and blow powder tanker constructed from aluminium heads the list of new models. A large number of its components are standard CF ones, which makes spares stocking and supply easier.

The tanker features a tapered barrel design with a light shallow mainframe this gives a low overall height of 3,4m (11.3ft) along the length of the trailer.

The single-compartment tank is 8.2m (27,3ft) long and has an 18 cu m (635 cuft) capacity. It is air-discharged via a line from the rear cone or for gravity discharge through a hinged hatch at the rear; the hatch also provides access for cleaning. Tipping is provided by an Edbro 6ENC single-ram gear.

The second tank exhibit is a 25,000litre (5,500 gal) stainless steel monocoque design offered with a range of options enabling conformation to a range of ADR and DTI specifications.

A single-compartment barrel with two baffles and two sealing rings, it is fitted with three pressure manlids and is designed for a working pressure of 206.9 kN/sqm (30 psi). The show model is insulated and fitted with steam ducting panels welded along the underside of the

tank. Overturn protection boxes are fitted, one at each end.

The Crane Fruehauf F2EWH tandemaxle single-leaf spring-suspension unit is mounted beneath a sub-frame and Rubery Owen 22,500 series axles are fitted. Overall trailer height is 3.7m (12,2ft), overall length 10.7m (35ft), and width 2.5m (8.2ft).

The CF "F"-series flow-line produced dry-freight van is now available in reefer form, and a 12.2m (40ft) semi-trailer on the stand has been designed to show both body finishes.

The reefer construction features 101 mm (4in) thick polyurethane side walls, front bulkhead and floor, 152mm (Bin) thick insulation in the roof and 83 mm (3.25 in) in the rear doors.

The trailer is plated for operation at 28.1 tonnes (27.8 tons) gross trailer weight 18.8 tonnes (18.5 tons) through the bogie and 9.7 tonnes (9.5 tons) through the pin.

The low-loader on the stand has an improved design and is constructed for carrying loads of up to 25.4 tonnes (25 tons). The removable gooseneck securing pin arrangement has been simplified and jacking pads now slide outward from beneath the deck to permit , body lifting/lowering with a suitable capacity bottle-jack.

The show vehicle is fitted with 15in wheels 20 in wheels are optional and the trailer can be adapted for beavertail loading.

The frame construction consists of two 356mm (141n) by 171 mm (6.75in) universal beams with 305 mm (12 in) long by 89mm (3.5 in) rolled steel channel section peripheral members and 15 mm (6 in) by 89 mm (3.5 in) cross-members.

The main deck is laid with a 48.3 mm (1.9 in) hardwood floor but the area above the rear axles is left clear for easy maintenance access. The trailer is mounted on CF -CD2 lubrication-free suspension which employs centrally pivoted nineleaf springs mounted in rubber-lined trunnions.

The standard model 24.5 cu m (32 cu yd) tipping semi-trailer has an all-welded aluminium U-shaped body with flat floor approximately 6 mm (0.3 in) thick. Body sides and front are about 4 mm (0.2 in) thick and the body is mounted on a conventional tipping chassis with fabricated I-beam main-members and pressed steel channel section cross-bearers.

The trailer is plated to 28.2 tonnes (27.8 tons) gross trailer weight, 18.8 tonnes (18.5 tons) through the tandemaxle multi-leaf suspension bogie and 9.5 tonnes (9.25 tons) through the kingpin.

Designed for retail delivery operation the Urban Trailer can carry a payload of up to 11.2 tonnes (11 tons) and it is plated to 14 tonnes (13.8 tons) gross trailer weight.

Mounted on CF'S light-duty eight-leaf spring running gear the 7.6m (25ft) long trailer has an I-beam section main-frame with channel section cross-members and hardwood half-lapped deck. The 1.4m (4.5ft) high headboard conforms to Code of Practice requirements and can be extended by 304 mm (1 ft) if required. The superstructure is designed to carry brewery products.

Constructed to meet Dutch operating regulations, the tandem-axle widespread suspension skeletal semi-trailer can accommodate either one 40ft or one or two 20ft ISO containers.

Shultz twistlocks are fitted all round, fixed versions at the front and rear and retractable ones elsewhere. A manually set load-sensing device is specified. Other features include a winch-type spare wheel carrier, underrun bumper bar with bracing member, and pilferage guards on the rear lamps.

The shallow trailer neck section depth enables containers to be carried without exceeding the Dutch 4m (13.1ft) overall height restriction. Special safety features that have been shown as part of CF's "double bottom" outfit have been fitted to a tandem-axle platform skeletal semi-trailer.

A wide angle TV camera is mounted at the rear and relays a picture to a monitor screen in the cab. And protection rails are fitted along the trailer sides to prevent pedestrians and other road users falling beneath the trailer. Other features include a full range of high-intensity fog lamps, reversing lamps with audible operating warning, and sidelamps.

Finally, CF is showing a tandem-axled T1R semi-trailer.

79 CRAVENS HOMALLOY

Cravens Homalloy (Preston) Ltd, 382 Blackpool Road, Preston, PR2 2DP.

A 12.2m (40ft) version of the new Taskold reefer and a standard Tasktip bulk tipping semi-trailer are on the Cravens Homalloy stand.

A particular feature of the Taskold is the construction of the floor which permits 2 cu m (70 cu ft) greater carrying capacity over 12.2 m (40ft) length than with other conventional vans. It consists of a highstrength composite structure with grp top-hat section cross-members, and, underfloor, stressed plywood insulation panels with some steel strengtheners.

The integral design trailer has a full width fifth-wheel rubbing plate with dual folding kingpins at 864mm (34 in) and 1.1m (42 in). The exterior aluminium panels are machine riveted to the Delaron and aluminium alloy top-hat section pillars positioned at 475mm (18 in) centres; the interior aluminium panels are backed with plywood.

The cavity walls are in-filled with spray-in polyurethane insulation, 120 mm (4 in) thick on the body sides and floor and 127mm (5 in) thick along the one-piece roof which is reinforced to take five top-hat section steel rails with meat hooks. Interior height of the 12.2m (40ft) show model is 2.4m (7ft 8in).

High-tensile steel bottom rails and aluminium extrusion top rails are riveted and huckbolted along their edges. Insulated double doors are fitted at the rear and have a cam-action locking mechanism and the trailer is shown fitted with ship lashing down rings.

Rubery Owen widespread tandem-axle running gear with monoleaf springs is slung beneath the trailer, which is shown fitted with a Hubbard 2000 refrigeration unit. Plated to 32.5 tonnes (32 tons)gross trailer weight, the bogie and kingpin are design plated to 20.3 tonnes (20 tons) and 12.2 tonnes (12 tons). To Construction and Use Regulations plated kingpin weight drops to 9.4 tonnes (9.25 tons).

The 26 cu m (36cu yd) capacity Tasktip is fitted with an 8.5m (28ft) all-welded aluminium body with 1.4 m (4.5ft) deep side walls.

Plated for operation at 28.4 tonnes (28 tons) gross trailer weight, unladen weight is 5.3 tonnes (5.2 tons). It has a twomember chassis constructed from fabricated l-beams having hts flanges top and bottom: main-members are braced with tubular cross-bearers.

The monocoque body is lifted by frontmounted Edbro 7SC single-ram tipping gear and its construction includes 6 mm (0.25 in) section floor and 5 mm (0.187 in) section sides, head and taildoor panels. The floor to side wall radius is constructed to CH's own special design and body side pillars are at the same centres as the body cross-members. The tail door is pivoted from top brackets that sit forward of the rear pillars for easier door closing and a grain hatch is also incorporated in the door. Rope hooks are fitted on the body panels and aluminium mudwings with rubber flaps complete the specification.

80 DYSON

R. A. Dyson & Co Ltd, Grafton Street, Liverpool, LB 6RH A new tandem-axle rubber suspension running gear and four trailers demonstrating the company's broad product range are on the Dyson stand.

Suitable for tankers and other semitrailer applications, the rubber suspension unit uses Metalastik rubber/steel sandwich springs, which act mainly under shear as far as load carrying is concerned and under compression to control roll. Telescopic dampers are fitted and the axles; rocker beams and locating arms are rubber-mounted to eliminate noise and reduce maintenance.

The 1.5m (5ft) axle-spread model is 2.6m (8.5ft) long and height to the top of the frame is 1 m (3.3ft).

Fitted with a Boalloy Li nkli ner body, the Dyson straight-frame trailer is specified with a Dyson air suspension unit to reduce chassis twist. The suspension, which incorporates Dunlop .Stabilaire components, maintains a constant load ing height and because of the good ride characteristics allows use of load securing devices to be kept down.

The vehicle is 11.3m (37ft) long and has a clear interior width of 2.4 rri (7.9ft).

The van sides consist of a series of equalsize sliding doors and the roof and bulkheads are fully insulated. A grp curved panel is incorporated on to the front bulkhead to reduce wind-resistance.

Moving up into cthe heavier payload category, Dyson is showing a six-wheeler drawbar trailer which can carry 20.3 tonnes (20 tons) of payload and is designed for overseas operations.

The chassis is constructed from deeplsection main-members with crossmembers at 0.6 m (2ft) centres and a fullwidth all-steel body frame. The steel deck plate is welded to the trailer chassis members for increased strength.

The 0.8 m (2.5ft) steel sides are detachable, as is the slot-in headboard.

The trailer is mounted on the INV rubber-mounted inverted-spring suspension designed for minimum maintenance.

The forecarriage is equipped with a double-row ball bearing turntable, and a two-line air-braking system actuates the 419mm (16.5 in) by 203 mm (8 in) S-cam brakes.

With a load capacity of 50.8 tonnes (50 tons), the Dyson 808 low-loader has an unsprung fully articulating eight-wheel bogie.

Loading height is just below 1 m (3.3ft) and the trailer is fitted with a 76.2 mm (3 in) hardwood deck except over the wheels where chequer plate is used to permit full wheel oscillation.

The semi-trailer is designed for either side or rear loading. Deck dimensions are 8.4m (27.5ft) long by 2.9m (9.5ft) wide; overall length is 12m (39.3ft).

The final exhibit is a Leyland Super Hippo fitted with Dyson's logging body and pulling a special bogie. Rated at 30.5 tonnes (30 tons) capacity the vehicle is designed for logging operations. When unladen, the bogie is lifted on to the tractor and carried piggy-back style.

306 HOY-GREEN

Hoy-Green Engineering Ltd, Stafford Park 2, Telford, Salop, TF3 3A8 Two semi-trailers are on the Hoy-Green stand and a further trailer frame is included in an integral design refrigerated body on Robert B. Massey's stand (no 304).

The single-axle drop frame semi-trailer has been built to carry bottled Calor gas. It is plated to 19.3 tonnes (19 tons) gross trailer weight and features rolled I-beam main-members with full-width crossmembers.

Heavy-duty rolled channel side-raves are fitted and a tail-lift is specified at the trailer rear. The axle and multi-leaf running gear are made by Rubery Owen, the axle is plated to 9.8 tonnes (10 tons), and the kingpin to 9.1 tonnes (9.25 tons). A Hope anti-jack knife device is included in the specification.

Designed for operation at 30.5 tonnes (30 tons) gross trailer weight, the tandem axle ATF 30 low-loader can carry a payload of about 19.3 tonnes (19 tons) within C & U Regulations and 25.4 tonnes (25 tons) to Special Types. The detachable swan-neck locates in the deck via two tapered neck pins and the assembly is locked using a fifth-wheel coupling device.

The main deck is 6.4m (21 ft) long and the chassis consists of four 355 mm (14 in) deep I-section mainmembers with closely spaced 152mm (6 in) deep channel section cross-members and fullwidth tubular cross-bearers for torsional stiffness.

The trailer is mounted on Rubery Owen multi-leaf suspension and axles and the bogie is plated within C & U Regulations to 18.3 tonnes (18 tons); the kingpin is design plated to 12,2 tonnes (12 tons).

Built as part of a frameless reefer design, the Hoy-Green chassis features Hands Neway air suspension and a Jost detachable kingpin. The vehicle is plated to 31.5 tonnes (31 tons) gross trailer weight, the bogie to 20.3 tonnes (20 tons) and the kingpin to 11.2 tonnes (11 tons).

21 KING

King Truck Equipment Ltd, Riverside, Market Harborough, Leics A specialist in the manufacture of lowloader and other heavy machinery carriers, King is showing only one trailer, a TD25/2H low-loader fitted with an improved version of the Hydroneck hydraulically removable gooseneck.

The trailer has a 6.4m (21 ft) by 2.4m (8ft) deck, and is plated for operation within C & U Regulations at 27.7 tonnes (27.8 tons) gross trailer weight though it is designed to carry payloads of up to 25.4 tonnes (25 tons). It is exhibited fitted with the King two-spring, trunnion-mounted suspension, which does not require lubrication as all mountings are rubber bushed.

The tandem-axle bogie is design plated to 22.4 tonnes (22 tons). The Hydroneck incorporates a guide pin on the neck and a tapered slot in the deck to permit easier alignment of the trailer and neck during the pick-up operation.

117 NIERRIWORTH

Merriworth (Engineering) Ltd, London Road, Stone, Dartford, Kent Three prototype trailer models are on the Merriworth stand. The first is a 12.2 m (40ft) TIR built to assess operator reaction to its new superstructure which features a steel front bulkhead and full-height vanstyle double doors at the rear. The 65 cu m (85 cu yd) capacity superstructure, a popularly used Continental design, is mounted on a Merriworth chassis which has dual retractable kingpins at 712mm (2.3ft) and 1.7m (5.6ft) and a Merriworth multi-spring tandem-axle bogie with Rubery Owen axles. The kingpin is plated to 12.2 tonnes (12 tons), the bogie to 18.3 tonnes (18 tons). Unladen trailer weight is 6.6 tonnes (6.5 tons) and the trailer is plated for operation in the UK at 30.5 tonnes (30 tons) gross trailer weight.

The second trailer a flat-platform vehicle features Merriworth's own widespread tandem-axle rubber suspension announced just before the Show. The bogie uses Metalastik rubber sandwich units as the suspension medium and the company claims that any axle windup normally caused by vehicle roll is eliminated by the bogie's pivoting and fixed axle arm construction.

The 12.2m (40ft) trailer is plated for operation in the UK at 32.5 tonnes (32 tons) gross trailer weight, 12.2 tonnes (12 tons) through the single kingpin and 20.3 tonnes'(20 tons) through the bogie.

The final exhibit is a four-axle drawbar trailer designed for logging operation in Sweden at 32.5 tonnes (32 tons) gross trailer weight. The trailer is carried on a pair of two-axle bogies the front one design plated to 16.3 tonnes (16 tons), the rear to 20.3 tonnes (20 tons).

Basically, the vehicle is a 10.2m (33.4ft) long skeletal with transverse bolsters to support the logs. Staunch ions at the outer ends of each bolster restrain the load laterally and when swung down they act as unloading ramps.

105 NI and G

M & G Trailers (Lye) Ltd, Hayes Lane, Lye, Worcs. DY9 lEIPA Six semi-trailers are shown by M & G, four on the stand and two in the demonstration park.

The first model inside the hall is a 12.35m (40.5ft) TIR step-frame semitrailer designed and manufactured to comply with several Continental standards. Plated for operation to 31 tonnes (30.5 tons) gross trailer weight, the trailer is fitted with dual kingpins at 865 mm (2.8ft) and 1.2m (3.9ft). The pin is plated to 10.7 tonnes (10.5 tons).

Rubery Owen tandem-axle multi-leaf running gear is specified and the bogie is plated to 20.3 tonnes (20 tons); 8.25 x 15 tyres are fitted.

The TIR approved superstructure has aluminium headboard, dropsides and tailgate and lacquered polyester-based PVC tilt. Unladen trailer weight is about" 6.1 tonnes (6 tons).

Plated for operation at 28.4 tonnes (28 tons) the 9m (29.5ft) overall length tipping semi-trailer is fitted with an allwelded 8.5m (27.8ft) long U-shaped aluminium body which has 1.4m (4.6ft) high walls and 2.3m (7.5ft) inside width. The tailgate features an air-actuated locking device tripped from the cab and the body is tipped to 46deg by Thompson twin-ram front-mounted tipping gear.

The body is mounted on a hts mainframe with I-beam main-members. Rubery Owen tandem-axle multi-leaf running gear and axles are specified. Unladen trailer weight is 4.6 tonnes (5.5 tons), the bogie is plated to 20.3tonnes (20tons) and the kingpin to 9.4tonnes (9.25 tons).

The third exhibit is a 7.0 re (23ft) long skeletal semi-trailer with an unladen weight of 3 tonnes and plated for operation to 28.4tonnes (28tons) gross trailer weight, 32.5 tonnes (32 tons) gcw.

The trailer has Rubery Owen tandemaxle monoleaf-spring running gear and axles, and the bogie is plated to 18.8tonnes (18.5 tons).

The last exhibit on the stand is a multipurpose platform skeletal with a coil well. The 9.2m (30.3ft) long semi-trailer has eight retractable twistlocks to handle either one 20ft or a 30ft ISO container and the locks are mounted or I-beam bolsters.

The 5.8m (19ft) long "U"-shaped coilwell has a special load-securing bolster to prevent movement of a 20.3-tonne (20ton) coil.

A 0.8m (2ft 6 in) high headboard, constructed to Code of Practice standards, is specified, and the trailer is mounted on Rubery Owen tandem-axle running gear with monoleaf suspension and 22,500 series axles.

The bogie is plated to 20.3tonnes (20 tons), the kingpin to 9.7 tonnes (9.5tons) and the trailer is plated for operation at 30tonnes (29.5 tons) gross trailer weight.

In the demonstration park M & G has a 10.4m (34ft) frameless insulated van mounted on Rebery Owen widespread multi-leaf spring suspension. The trailer is plated for operation at 32.5 tonnes (32 tons) gross trailer weight, and unladen weight is 6.4tonnes (6.25tons).

120 MURFITT

R. Murfitt Ltd, Sandal! Road, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire This company specia lizes in bulk-carrying tankers three semi-trailer models, typical of the range, are on the stand.

The 20,452=litre (4,500gal) singlecompartment bitumen road tanker is plated for operation at 32.5 tonnes (32 tons) gcw. Constructed from mild steel, the tank has cylindrical cones atthe front and rear sections and is insulated with 50 mm (2 in) of Rocksil with aluminium cladding around the barrel and glassfibre at the ends. The trailer is mounted on a Norde tandem-axle rubber suspension bogie plated, to 18 tonnes (18.3tons); the kingpin is plated to 11.4tonnes (11.3 tons).

Designed for carriage of hazardous liquids the 25,000-litre (5,500gal) tank has two compartments and complies with ADR classes 111A, 1VA and V. Constructed from stainless steel the cylindrical-section tank is designed to operate at a working pressure of 2,62kN/sqm (38psi) and the front compartment holds 6,684 litres (1,500gal), the rear 18,184 litres (4,000gal). Twin limpet-type heater tubes run the full external length of the tank base and the tank is glassfibre insulated and is clad with polished aluminium sheet.

York tandem-axle running gear with multi-leaf springs is specified for the trailer. The bogie is plated to 20.3 tonnes (20 tons), the kingpin to 11.4 tonnes (11.3 tons) and the trailer is designed for operation at 32.5 tonnes (32 tons) gcw.

The third vehicle is a 23,866-litre (5,250 gal) capacity general-purpose tanker to ADR classes 111A, 1VA, and V, and T1R approved. Cylindrical cones are fitted at the front and rear and the stainless steel unit is designed for working pressures of 262kN/sqm (38 psi). Twin limpet-type heater tubes run the full external length of the tank base.

The Norde tandem-axle running gear is plated to 19 tonnes (18.7 tons), and the kingpin to 11.35 tonnes (11 tons).

56 NEVILLE

Neville Industries (Mansfield) Ltd, Bradder Works, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire NG18 5DC1.

Tippers are the speciality of this company and one example of the range, a Nimrod frameless tipping semi-trailer, is on the stand. An already established model which uses a Villiers retracting bogie tipping process, the show exhibit features a prototype fifth-wheel coupling modification that eliminates the need for the fifth-wheel to be blocked Or attached rigidly to its trunnions for tipping.

Two channel section stops are welded to the rear of the trailer rubbing plate and go under the firth-wheel rocker box in order to prevent any forward or back movement. The end bushes of the ram trunnions are welded and so all movement during tipping is limited to the fifthwheel plate.

The 7.9m (26ft) long by 2.3m (7.5ft) wide by 1.3 m (4.2ft) sides all-aluminium welded 23 cu m (30 cu yd) body has 6 mm (0.25) thick floors and 4 mm (0.157 in) thick sides. Unladen weight of the trailer is 4.3 tonnes (4.2 tons). The tailgate is hung from a channel section member which runs across the body and it is fitted with a grain hatch and screw-typepressure securing clamps.

31 SAMSON

George Neville Truck Equipment Ltd, Lindleys Lane, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.

George Neville markets a range of tipping semi-trailers under the name Samson: two models are on the stand.

Designed for operation at 32.5 tonnes (32 tons) gcw, the all-steel body is totally enclosed. It has a front-loading hatch permitting loading while the body is partially tipped; an auger screw is fitted at the rear of the body to unload loose materials.

Made from 10-guage hts the body is 7 m (22.8 ft) long by 2.3 m (7.6ft) wide and maximum internal height inside the "tank" is 1.8m (6.1 ft). Volumetric capacity is 28.9 cu m (37.7 cu yd).

Anthony Carrimore single-ram frontmounted tipping gear is specified.

The other tipper is open-topped, but is fitted with the company's new Easysheet powered cover a hydraulically powered device which, it is claimed, pulls the body cover into place within a few minutes.

The all-welded aluminium construction body is mounted on an I-beam main-frame, measures 8.8m (28.8ft) long by 2.3m (7.6f1) wide and has 1.6m (5.1 ft) deep sides. The aluminium panels are 6mm (0.25 in) thick and top-hat section ribs are set along the body exterior at 0.6m (2ft) centres.

The 30.5 cu m (40 cuyd) capacity body has a reinforced floor which is overlaid with longitudinally placed hardwoodfilled angle strips. The twin rear doors can be folded back against the body sides and one door is fitted with a grain hatch. Unladed trailer weight is 4.9 tonnes (4.8 tons), and the vehicle is shown fitted with Rubery Owen multi-leaf spring suspension and Rubery Owen axles. The bogie is plated to 18.8 tonnes (18.5 tons), and the trailer is plated for operation at 32.5 tonnes (32 tons) gcw. Anthony Carrimore tipping gear is also fitted to this trailer.

Apart from the trailers, GN is showing a single-axle dolly with a hinged and lockable A-frame for easier coupling of the dolly to a semi-trailer. The screw is hinged on the middle of the A-frame and can be swung over and dropped into a slot on the front of the dolly. Turning the screw alters the angle of the A-frame relative to the dolly and enables dolly attitude to be adjusted for easy coupling.

The company is also showing its new Elastic A-frame support, consisting of a friction piston inside a cylinder. The piston is linked to a chain which can be hooked onto the A-frame. The cylinder is attached to the turntable frame and the device will support the A-frame at any convenient coupling height.

110 SCAMMELL

Scammell Trailers, British Leyland UK Ltd, Hoveringham, Nottingham NG14 7J2 Scammell Trailers, who have recently moved to Hoveringham, are showing two semi-trailers representative of their range.

The first is a 12.2 m (40ft) flat-platform skeletal trailer to carry one 40ft, one 30ft or two 20ft ISO containers or general cargo. Designed for operation at 32.5 tonnes (32 tons) gcw, the trailer is plated to 27.4 tonnes (27 tons) gross trailer weight, 18.8 tonnes (18.5 tons) through the bogie and 9.6 tonnes (9.5 tons) through the pin. Approximate unladen trailer weight is 5.3 tonnes.

The main-frame is constructed from one-piece rolled-steel beams reinforced at high stress areas and full width I-beam cross-members at 0.6m (2ft) centres. Loading height above the bogie is approximately 1.6 m (5.1 ft}.

The tandem-axle leaf-spring running gear is fitted to Rubery Owen 9.4 tonnes (9.25 tons) capacity axles, and the trailer has two-speed Scammell-type landing legs.

The trailer specification also in4cludes mudflaps, splash plates and an anti under-run bumper.

The second trailer is a flat-platform with curtain-sided body single-axle type with automatic Scammell Supersafe coupling gear and undercarriage.

Plated for operation at 18.3 tonnes (18.5 tons) gcw, its frame is constructed from 203 mm (8 in) by 76.2mm (3in) rolled steel channel main-members with a rolled steel angle-space frame. The cross-members and side raves are a bolted construction and trailer dimensions are 10 m (32.8ft) long by 2.5m (8.2ft) wide. Loading height over the axle is approximately 1.3 m (4.1 ft).

Unladed trailer weight is 3.6 tonnes (3.5 tons) and it is specified with multileaf spring running gear and one Scammell axle of 9.1 tonnes (9 tons) capacity. The coupler is design plated to 6.1 tonnes (6 tons).

123 SCOTTORN

Scottorn Trailers Ltd, Chartridge, Chesham, Buckinghamshire

A drawbar trailer fully equipped to provide roadside or on-site breakdown assistance is on the Scottorn stand. The 1.5tonne capacity outfit has an overall length of 4 m (13.3ft) and features an all-welded construction with 127 mm (5 in) by 61.4 mrn (2.5in) channel section main, members. The rolled steel drawbar is fitted with a 76.2 mm (3 in) diameter Nato eye with overrun and hand-operated parking brake.

The unit is mounted on four wheels and has a multi-leaf spring suspension.

78 TASKERS

Taskers Trailers Ltd, Anna Valley, Andover, Hampshire SP11 7NF Developed for carrying concentrated loads, the new Taskers F6 LB low-loader semi-trailer deserves close study. It features a new, hydraulically operated gooseneck and spring-assisted rearloading ramps linked to the trailer's beaver tail.

Designed for operation at 32.5 tonnes (32 tons) gross trailer weight. The 12.2 m (40ft) long trailer has an 8.9m (29 ft) lower deck length and is 2.4 m (8ft) wide. The frame consists of four I-section mainmembers with the outer members strengthened to accept side loading. Optional extras for the trailer include 230 mm (9 in) main-deck side extensions that push external width out to 2.9m (9.5ft).

The removable swanneck rests on the tapered front of the maindeck and it is located and secured by two high-tensile pins. The trailer can be split and reconnected by one man. A centre spigot on the neck engages in an access throat for easy re-aligning when coupling. The lowprofile axle-bridge deck provides additional floor space and with the hinged ramps permits rear loading of rubber tyred and similar plant.

The bogie is covered with chequer plate and the main deck with a hardwood floor which protrudes about 6.4 mm (0.25 in) above the main rails.

Unladen trailer weight is 7.4 tonnes (7.3 tons) and it is plated to 27.2 tonnes (26.8 tons) gross trailer weight, 17 tonnes (16.8 tons) through the Rubery Owen multi-leaf spring tandem-axle bogie and 10.2 tonnes (10 tons) through the kingpin.

Also on the stand is a Taskers F111/1 triaxle TIR semi-trailer chassis manufactured to suit French regulations. The 12.2m (40ft) long by 2.4m (7.9ft) wide chassis is plated to 32.5 tonnes (32 tons) gross trailer weight. After the Show it will be fitted with a French-designed TIR body.

The fabricated I-section main-frame has I-beam section cross-members and the trailer is mounted on Rubery Owen running gear. The bogie is design plated to 20.3 tonnes (20 tons) and the kingpin 8.1 tonnes (8 tons).

126 TRAILOR SA (UK)

Trailor SA (UK) Ltd, Greg Street, Reddish, nr Stockport, Cheshire, SKJ YBN Formerly Peak Commercials, Trailor has only one exhibit on its stand, a 12.2m (40ft) straightframe TIR semi-trailer. Plated to 30.8 tonnes (30.3 tons) gross trailer weight, the vehicle's unladen weight is 6.6 tonnes (6.5 tons).

The trailer frame is constructed from Ibeam section fabricated main-members 506mm (16in) deep by 152mm (6in) wide with channel-section crossmembers. Two kingpins are fitted to the rubbing plate, at 0.9m (2.8ft) and 1.2m (3.9ft) centres.

Rubery Owen running gear with multispring 2m (6.6ft) widespread bogie is fitted and is plated to 20.3 tonnes {20 tons). Unlike those of previous Peak TIR designs, the superstructure has singlepiece pillars and a flat roof. Reduction in

Welford Truck Bodies Ltd, Hainge Road, Tividale, Warley, Worcs A newcomer to the trailer stands, Welford is showing two semi-trailers both with welded aluminium frames.

The all-aluminium tipping semi-trailer is fitted with a 22.9 cu m (30cuyd) fixedside bulk tipping body with 4 mm (0.15 in) thick sidewall and 5.5 m (0.2 in) thick section floor.

The alloy I-section chassis mainmembers are fabricated from two Tsection members welded together; two tubular cross-bearers provide torsional stiffness. The all-steel fifth-wheel rubbing plate is bolted to the chassis via an aluminium sub-frame. A gasket is sandwiched between them to prevent corrosion.

Thompson twin-ram front-mounted tipping gear is specified as is the standard Rubery Owen tandem-axle TM running gear and axles. The bogie is plated to 20.3 tonnes (20 tons), the kingpin to 9.7 tonnes (9.5 tons), and the complete trailer to 30 tonnes (29.5 tons) gross trailer weight.

A prototype Dunlop single-axle airsuspension unit is fitted to the second trailer, the Urb-a-tic. Designed primarily for delivery work, it has a low floor height. Unladed trailer weight is just 1.9 tonnes.

The 7.3 m (24ft) long trailer has a 1.2 m (4ft) high headboard and cross-boarded hardwood floor.

The main-frame is constructed from channel section main-members and cross-bearers and the channel section cross-members taper from the mainmember to the side-raves.

Total weight of the trailer, coupled to a Bedford urban tractive unit, is below 5.1 tonnes (5 tons); the trailer is plated for operations at 13 tons gcw.

124, 302, 301 YORK

York Trailer Co Ltd, Northallerton, Yorks, DL7 8IJE York's star attraction is a tilt-covered T!R semi-trailer derived from the Savoyard design, which is popular in France. The superstructure features a pressed steel corrugated front bulkhead, as on York containers, and at the rear York has fitted the full-height doors from the Freightmaster van. Loading from the back can be completed without stripping off the tilt or dismantling the structure and for crane loading the door frame header rail can be swung away for easy access. The lightweight aluminium dropsides are interchangeable, as are the roof and side slats.

The complete superstructure is mounted on a standard York 12.2 m (40ft) Lo-Deck semi-trailer and the outfit is designed for operation at 40.6 tonnes (40 tons) gcw. The trailer frame is constructed from fabricated I-beam Mainmembers which have short section depth in the neck area in order to give optimum internal body height within the proposed EEC 4m (13.1 ft) overall height limit.

The trailer is plated for operation at 34.5 tonnes (34 tons) gross trailer weight; the bogie and kingpin are design plated to 22 tonnes (21.7 tons) and 14 tonnes(13.8 tons) respectively.

The second semi-trailer exhibit on the stand is a 12.2 m (40ft) Freightmaster van fitted with York's recently announced Airpoise air-suspension unit. The tandem-axle running gear weighs about as much as a leaf-spring unit and in anticipation of EEC regulations the bogie is fitted with 11-tonne capacity axles.

Features of the Freightmaster body include the single-sheet alloy roof which is bonded under tension to the roof bows and riveted to the cant rails outside the cargo area. A patented rear header rail brings the door top edge flush to the roof underside for easier loading.

Selected components are pretreated against rust.

Outside in the demonstration park York will have three further semi-trailer models, including its recently announced grp chassisless van. Designated the GRP series, it is built on the same base frame as York's current range of Freightmaster vans. It also uses the same running units, rear door frame, and container-type doors.

The 18 mm (0.7 in) thick Glasonit composite panels are attached to the side raves using standard Huckbolts and a smooth interior finish is achieved by using Hucktainers so an operator can use the full width of the van interior without snagging on panel-fixing projections.

Interior width of the van is 2.4m (8ft) and width through the doors is fractionally less than the internal width. Unladen weight of the grp model is almost identical to that of the Freightmaster; main operator advantages include high resistance to impact damage, ease. of interior and exterior cleaning. The smooth gelcoat exterior finish is considered ideal for signwriting.

The TIR trailer in the demonstration park is designed for operation on the French railway Kangaroo system and is fitted with a York high-articulation widespread bogie with multi-leaf springs and Rubery Owen metric axles.

Also in the park is a standard 12.2m (40ft) platform skeletal trailer.

In the gallery the company is showing one of the few drawbar exhibits at the Show a version of the Freightmaster van, 7.3m (24ft) long, 2.4 m (8ft) high and plated to 16.3 tonnes (16 tons) gross trailer weight, 8.1 tonnes (8 tons) per axle.

Also in the gallery is a close-coupled drawbar trailer for carrying a single skip. Overall length, including the swan-neck, is 5.0 m (16.3 ft). The 2.7 m (9.5 ft) by 1.9 m (6.3 in) platform is covered with steel chequer plate.

Other new exhibits on the York stands include an uprated version of its heavyduty sliding coupler with Big D fifthwheel. The new unit is designed for operation at 44.7 tonnes (40 tons) gcw with two-axle tractive units -previously it was only available for three-axle units.

Exhibited for the first time in the UK is the type 212, 11-tonne capacity trailer axle which is fully type-approved by the German TUV authorities. The 420mm (16.5 in) by 200 mm (7.9 in) brake version is Dauer Bremse tested and approved.

Ready for the proposed EEC 11-tonne axle rating York have an axle with cast steel spoke wheels with detachable rims. The axle has 419 mm (16.5 in) by 219 mm (8.6 in) brakes, which comply with EEC Directive 71/320 for trailer brake performance.
