• A number of detail changes aimed at improving safety has been introduced on the Transit range by the Ford Motor Co. Ltd. Many have been made as a result of information gathered on a large-scale crash-test programme carried out by Ford.
The Transit facia has a completely new look with the introduction of piano-key safety switches for auxiliaries. Accessory switches jiave breakaway stems and the ignition, choke (on petrol models) and engine stop and idle controls (on diesels) have been repositioned so that they are outside the area of potential danger to the driver in an accident. Heater controls have been repositioned below the facia to the left of the driver and the ashtray. set into the centre of the facia, has a new flush-fitting handle.
Below the facia on the passenger's side there is a new parcel shelf which is designed to collapse on impact and the glove box on Custom models now has a burst-proof catch. Facia padding fitted to the Custom versions is now an option on the standard Transit and the padded sun visors have revised brackets with less projection. The interior mirror is now mounted on a stem that drops out on impact, and when the optional antitheft steering-column lock is fitted it is located outside the driver's knee area.
A new option on the Transit is a system with which all four indicator lights can be set flashing as a warning to other traffic and other changes include new designs for door handles, window winders and so on.
Test data on the forces of moving loads during impact have resulted in improved designs of halfand full-width bulkheads behind the driver now being made available. On bus models rear quarter vent catches and rear-seat anchorages are new.
Externally the new Transit is recognizable by a minor change to the upper radiator grille. The former wire grille is replaced by ventilation slots set in the extended body panel and the letters "Ford" on the grille will now be black or white according to the body colour.
