• Mr. M. J. Carthew, of Al Shaws Caravan Site, Pinfold Lane, Aldridge, Staffs, has provisionally patented an axle-load-sensing device that is basically a refinement of the variableresistance type.
The weight-recording unit is contained in a telescopic member mounted between the chassis frame and an axle bracket, a resistor winding strip being attached to a flat surface on the upper end of the inner rod member. When the device is operative a spring-loaded arm attached to the inside of the tubular member, contacts the resistor winding at its outer end, and a current is relayed to a meter in the cab that is proportional to the displacement of the axle and therefore the imposed load on the axle. If two units are fitted, the displacement of each spring is recorded.
An important feature of the device is the use of a switch-controlled solenoid, to separate the contact point from the resistor winding when the vehicle is travelling. In this way wear and tear of the electrical points is reduced to a minimum. The solenoid is springloaded and when it is not energized it holds the contact point away from the winding. When it is switched on, the actuating rod is retracted and the point contacts the winding.
The resistor winding is easily renewable and a unit can readily he recalibrated. At its upper end the outer tubular member is attached to a chassis bracket by means of a threaded rod and two nuts that enable the setting of the unit to be adjusted.
