• An application by Mr Cohn Protheroe of Marlborough Road, Newport, Mon., for a B-licence in order to set up business carrying goods as required for the Llanwern Slag Co., Ltd., was adjourned by the South Wales LA at Cardiff last week. There were objections to the application by the BRB and 10 transport contractors.

Appearing for the applicant was Mr Norman Lloyd Edwards who said that at present Mr Protheroe was employed as a foreman fitter with R.A. Wheeler Ltd., Llanwern, who had raised no objection to the application. He said Mr Protheroe wished to purchase a tipper not exceeding 51 tons and become an owner-driver carrying goods for one named customer.

Supporting the application was Mr B. G. Rogers, manager, Llianwern Slag, who said he considered he had sufficient work for another vehicle. "Last year", he said, "we had a record tonnage year and the indication is, with the annual tenders received, that the coming year will be the same." Appearing for the objectors, Mr Rosser John asked Mr Protheroe if he knew the mileage, area and rates received and if he had worked out the cost.

Replying, Mr Protheroe said he intended to work on the same basis as other operators in the area and not undercut the price. He said he wished to purchase a new vehicle and thought he could make a success of it as he would be able to keep his vehicle in a good state of repair himself.

Cross-examined by Mr John, Mr Rogers said that between 25 and 30 vehicles were at present operating on B-licences for him, but questioned further, he agreed the number might be nearer 40.

Mr Rogers added that Jones Motors (Kenfig Hill) had at present two lorries working on the site but wished to withdraw thein when there were other vehicles to take over.

The LA, Mr R. R. Jackson, said the application would be adjourned until further evidence could be produced.
