Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Merriworth (Engineering) Ltd.. London Road, Stone, Dartford, Kent

SPECIAL multi-purpose trailers, lightweight container carriers and comprehensively equipped TIR vehicles are shown on this stand. The newest product is the new lightweight skeletal which is designed for either 20ft or 30ft containers. This unit is claimed to be over half a ton lighter than other models of the same capacity.

The weight saving has been achieved in the main from the use of single leaf springs and low-profile tubeless tyres in single formation. Because of the concern about rolling when handling containers Merriworth has had the single leaf springs specially designed and manufactured for the job. The leaves are 3.5in. wide, 17 per cent more than normal.

Frame strength has not been sacrificed to save weight, the main frames being of fabricated 1-sections 18in. deep, and well cross-braced in the regions of the outriggers carrying the container locks.

The second most important exhibit here is the VP. which is a 33ft long version and equipped for carrying containers, for use as a flat platform, and fitted with sockets to accept the framing for TIR bodywork. This is not a flat fitted with container locks but rather a container carrier fitted with a deck. The understructure of the VP is identical with the skeletal produced exclusively for carrying containers.

The TIR units on show incorporate some features exclusive to Merriworth. The bodywork is claimed to be the only type of British manufacture which will accommodate two Continental-standard pallets side by side, and the axles are of German manufacture.

A single-axle, straight-frame generalpurpose semi-trailer for operation at 24-ton g.v.w. completes the exhibits by Merriworth. A feature of the company's designs is the use of unitized running gear which enables easy fitment of singleor tandemaxle assemblies as required.
