Hands Trailers Ltd., lcknield Way, Letchworth, Herts
THIS company has concentrated its display on the lightweight range of small articulated outfits it has introduced since the last show. Four different versions are to be seen.
One is an 18ft long drop-sided platform trailer coupled to a Ford D300 tractive unit, the others a 17ft long aluminiumalloy-bodied box van and a newly introduced chassis-less van semi-trailer with a stepped floor. This unit is 23.5ft long and provides for an 18ft long, low-level floor. It features independent suspension and is mounted on 9.00-20 tyres in single formation.
Also new to the company's products is the recently announced Safelock fifth-wheel coupling. It incorporates a cast-steel plate designed for imposed loads of up to 17 tons, an 8-ton increase over the previous model, and it also provides for a considerable increase in rubbing surface giving greater stability to a vehicle when cornering. The rubbing surface of the new fifth-wheel is machined and the total weight is 2881b.
Other trailer equipment shown on this stand is a running gear made up from pressed-steel channel main frames and cross-members and incorporating the Hands/Neway air suspension. This is a tandem-axled unit suitable for use on frameless vans and tankers. The suspension units, known as the ARH type, comprise an independent air cushion for each wheel interposed between the trailing ends of a beam at each side of the vehicle and the sub-frame. The leading ends of the beams are pivoted on a square steel-torsion bar
which reduces the roll tendency inherent in air suspensions. Where the running gear takes the form of a tandem as exhibited, the interconnection between the two axles is achieved by a pipeline connecting the two sets of bags. Telescopic dampers are fitted to each side of both axles.
