ONE of the largest semi-trailers exhibited at Earls Court is shown by Dyson: it is a 60-ton capacity double-drop-frame machinery carrier with a detachable swan neck. It is designed on the same lines as many units of the type which Dyson has exported but in fact this particular unit is for a UK operator and it is fitted with an eight-wheeled rear bogie.
The trailer shown is one of a complete range of the type which Dyson is now offering in capacities from 20 to 60 tons. Those at the lower end of the range which are semi-trailers as opposed to draw-bar units arc fitted with tandem rear axles and the 20-ton model with a suitable prime mover will operate legally under Construction and Use Regulations at 32 tons g.v.w. The bigger models in this range are suitable for use both under C and U and Special Types Regulations.
Also on this stand is a general cargo semi-trailer destined for service with Schweppes, the most interesting feature of which is the travelling canopy which is of Scandinavian design but manufactured for the UK by Dyson. Although this component is not new it features a number of improvements among which are detachable side pillars which overcome the problem of variable sizes of pallets when loading and off-loading.
Two tandem-axle air-suspension units are shown, one of these being the latest addition to Dyson's Aeroride range. This running gear is fitted with double-acting, anti-sway bars which have been designed to stiffen the suspension with a view to its being used for increased gross vehicle weights in the future.
The last exhibit on this Stand is a completely new wide-spread twin-tyred airsuspension bogie which has a wheelbase of 79in. and a tracking rear axle.
HIGHWAY TRAILERS Stand 86

THE four exhibits on this Stand include a 30-ton g.v.w. super lightweight flatplatform trailer which the makers claim to have the lightest unladen weight of any trailer available today. The model on display has a net unladen weight of under 3 tons despite the fact that 18in. deep main frames are used.
Tubular cross-members are pierced through the webs of the main frames as are aluminium alloy channel-section crossbearers, set to range the floorboards level with the top flanges of the main frames. Rubery Owen suspension with single taperleaf springs is used and tubular axles with 16.5in. by 7in. brake gear carry 13.00/22.5 10-stud centre nave wheels fitted with Goodyear Super Single 16.5/22.5 16-ply. The unit is shown connected to a Leyland Beaver tractive unit and is destined for service with Vic Hallam Ltd.
An ultra lightweight 30-tonner is also on show, this embodying the same main frame assembly but having pressed-steel, channelsection cross-bearers pierced through at 24in. centres carrying a 22mm (.875in.) plywood floor and the exclusive rolledsection Highway side rave. The vehicle has a 2ft headboard which is braced forward to extensions of the main frame and it incorporates retractable twistlocks for use with ISO containers. It will handle 20ft and 30ft containers, has Rubery Owen single-leaf springing and is mounted on 9.00-20 tyre equipment.
A maximum capacity 40-footer with 18in. by 61n. main frames with the kingpin positioned 39in. back and having a widespread running gear with a wheelbase of 82in. is shown. This configuration will give 32 tons on four axles and in addition to its 1.25in. thick half-lapped hardwood floor, it has six pairs of retractable twistlocks permitting it to handle 20ft, 30ft and 40ft ISO containers.
Brakes are 16.5in. by 7in. S-cam and the trailer is mounted on Rubery Owen suspension and Michelin D20 X tyres. It has been built for Samuel Williams and Son Ltd.
In the lighter range, a 24-ton single-axle flat vehicle with a 29ft long platform is shown, this again following the same Highway pierced-frame construction methods. In this case Dunlop Pneuride air suspension is fitted and the axle is a 22,5001b unit with 16.5in. by 8.625in. S-cam brakes.
A cargo flat is shown, this being a general-purpose unit which will accommodate a wide variety of goods; it has corner posts and fixed head and tail boards enabling it to be stacked either in conjunction with other flats of its type or ISO containers.
