THE two types of Unipower-Eaton two-axle bogie used for third axle conversions are again displayed by this company and a third exhibit on the stand is a new Unipower 4 x 4 tractor.
An important change in the case of the tractor is the use of a Perkins V8.510 engine. The model, which is particularly suitable for use on timber haulage, is designed for operation at 24 tons g.c.w. and it can be operated as a 4 x 2 as well as a 4 x 4 on hard roads, there being the facility to disengage the front-wheel drive. The model has a five-speed gearbox which drives to a two-speed auxiliary gearbox and apart from dividing the drive between the front and the rear axle this has a step-down ratio of 1.634 to 1 as well as direct drive. The brake system has lock actuators for parking and a secondary system is provided to meet the Regulations. Brake sizes are 17in. by 4in. at the front and 15.5in. by 8in, at the rear giving a total lining area of 740 sq.in.
The Unipower-Eaton bogie which is made as a double-drive or single-drive unit has Hendrickson steel suspension. It is used on the Comrner-Unipower six-wheelers recently announced by Rootes. In both the single-drive and double-drive model there are Eaton two-speed axles and a feature of the design is the strength built into the frame of the original chassis after the extension needed for the conversion has been added. The conversion is also applied and approved for the Seddon 13:four with Perkins V8 engine and as in the case of the Commer Maxiload conversion, the finished chassis is plated for 22 tons gross provided the wheelbase is of a suitable dimension.
