THREE chassis are on the Volvo stand at Earls Court: two four-wheel tractive units—the F88 and F86—together with an F886 six-wheeler with Parator equipment mounted on it. All three chassis have certain things in common, these including a turbocharged engine, rangechange gearbox and tilt cab, but the F88 is a bigger and more powerful design than the F86 and is suitable for higher weights.
The F86 was the first vehicle introduced to Britain by Ailsa Trucks Ltd. of Glasgow. The tractive unit is plated for 32 tons gross and has the same general mechanical specification as the FB86 22-ton-gross six-wheeler except for the trailing axle on the latter. Wheelbase is 9ft 10in, and the turbocharged Volvo engine produces 195 bhp gross at 2,400 rpm. The drive is through an R50 eight-speed range-change gearbox to the double-reduction rear axle and the all-steel tilt cab affords a good degree of comfort for the driver. Power assisted steering is standard and the full-air brakes are on split circuits with spring brakes for the parking system. A light /laden valve is standard at the driving axle. The FB86 six-wheeler is a long-wheelbase chassis-18ft lin. from the centre line of the front axle to the centre line of the bogie--and as stated is identical to the F86 apart from the trailing axle.
Ailsa Trucks introduced the Volvo 88 Series at the last Glasgow Show and the Earls Court exhibit is the F88 two-axle tractive unit which is designed to operate at up to 48 tons gz.w. Wheelbase is 10ft 6in. and the turbocharged engine has a maximum gross output (SAE) of 270 bhp at 2,200 rpm. Like the F86, the F83 has an eight-speed synchromesh range-change box but in the heavier machine the R60 is used. The double-reduction rear axle has differential lock as standard and power-assisted steering is also a standard fitting. Braking is by a split system with the tractive unit brakes and the semi-trailer coupling on different circuits and spring brakes on the driving axle provide for parking.
