ON this stand there is a range of fire crash tenders equipped for various duties and also a comprehensive display of gearboxes made by Thornycroft and seen in a number of vehicles exhibited by members of the British Leyland Motor Corporation at Earls Court.

One of the high-performance fire-fighting vehicles on the stand is a Nubian Major 6 x 6 fitted out for airfield use with a Carmichael cab, body and fire-fighting equipment. The chassis has a Cummins V8, 300 bhp engine driving through a semi-automatic gearbox and there is a two-speed transfer gearbox with air operated selection of front-wheel drive. Equipment on the vehicle includes a 1,300gal water tank and 130gal foam tank and a 1,200 g.p.m. pump is driven from the main power take off. A roof-mounted foam monitor and two foam hand lines give a maximum discharge of 8,620 g.p.m. and fire-fighting controls are pneumatically operated with over-riding manual controls.

The other two vehicles are Nubian 6 x 6 models both having a Rolls-Royce B.81 petrol engine with an output of 235 bhp. Like the Nubian Major these 6 x 6 vehicles have right-hand drive and while one has a Pyrene cab, body and equipment, the other is equipped by Merryweather. Both chassis can deliver foam, and in addition, the Pyrene-equipped vehicle has a Chlorobromo-methane unit while the Merryvveather has a CO installation.

Seven gearboxes are on display, all constant-mesh designs and for input torques of up to 600 lb.ft. There are five six-speed units, two of thern'with two-speed splitter gearing, one a five-speed unit and the final one is a two-speed transfer box suitable for a torque of 2,100 lb.ft.
