WE are able, this week, to supplc• VY ment the brier forecast, published last week, of the exhibits to be seen in the commercial-vehicle section of the Paris Salon, from October 3-1& The Laffly stand should be a centre of interest, as this concern will show a new form of cross-country machine known as the Taus Terrains. The design is intended to combine the advantages of the track-layer on rough country with the high speed of wheeled vehicles on level ground or on the road.
The Tons Terrains is available in two forms, one incorporating a drive to both rear axles, and the other having a special transmission system to the front wheels, thus driving on all six wheels. Small bumper wheels, with pneumatic tyres, protect the radiator and prevent the machine from digging its nose into the ground, whilst a similar pair of wheels, mounted beneath the chassis, protect the gearbox and transmission and prevent the machine from stalling on its " stomach."
The machine is claimed to be much fas'er on difficult land than is the average track-layer, whilst on the road it can maintain a steady 50 m.p.h.
Another interesting Laffiy exhibit will be a self-loading refuse collector. The body is completely enclosed and the refuse is introduced by means of a rotary loading device, which compresses the material. Several new firefighting machines will also appear in the Laffly display.
The Latil concern will be showing six types, namely, the M.2B.3, M.2B.4 and M.2A.1B.3 petrol models and the A.B.3 and B.8 oilers with Gardner engines built under licence. The
M.2A.1B.3 is an entirely new tonner, intended chiefly for passenger work, incorporating a four-cylindered 100-mm. by 130-mm. petrol engine. A Cotal electro-magnetic gearbox, instead of a normal four-speed gearbox, is available in this model, which will be shown both in chassis form and as a municipal bus.
The Soinua company will be exhibiting two chassis in the main hall, one being designed for municipal bus work and carrying a 54-passenger body, and the other a 10-tonner for goods transport.
An interesting feature of the bus chassis is the employment of the Cotal elecfro-magnetic transmission system. The Cotal four-speed gearbox has a series of epicyclics, brought into action by magnetic clutches, The final drive in the rear axle includes a straightpinion double-reduction gear to the road wheels.
The 10-ton goods chassis is an oiler with a six-cvlindered 126-mm. by 180-mm, engine developing 150 b.h.p.
Messrs. Bernard are concentrating on oil-driven vehicles for 1936 and an outstanding exhibit in their range will be the 10-ton six-wheeled chassis. This machine is designed for long-distance goods transpdrt at relatively high speeds. On test between Paris and Marseille, under lull load, it is said to have maintained an average speed, including stops, of over 45 k.p.h., with a fuel consumption of 22 litres of gasoil per 100 kiloms. The engine is a Bernard-Gardner six-cylindered built under licence,
The Citroen organization will display a p..nge of five commercial chassis, including a new 30-cwt. vehicle, in.tended for rapid delivery work, known as type 23. It will be shown in chassis form and as a smart van. Supplementing its display in the Grand Palais, the Citroen concern will stage a complete range of commercial, as well as
private, vehicles in the great Citroen exhibition building, Place de l'Europe, Paris, during the Salon period.
One of the leading French commercial bodybuilders, Messrs. Paquette et Breteau, reconstructed some time ago under the title of Ateliers de Construction et de Carrosserie, will exhibit some fine examples of their passenger bodies. These will include an " aerodynamique coach body on a RenaultSchemia chassis for the Cooks-Wagon • Lit services, and a partially built bus for railway-feeder lines in the provinces. This latter exhibit is intended to demonstrate the A.C.C. special method of metal construction.
