Ex-Service Men as Traffic Controllers.

At a meeting of the magistrates' committee of the Glasgow Corporation a letter was received from the town clerk of Aberdeen relative to the question ot appointing disabled ex-service men as traffic controllers and suggesting that a conference of representatives of the chief cities of Scotland should be held on the subject. The chief constable reported that the appointment of such men as traffic controllers was not commendable inasmuch as the duties of traffic control in the city called for a high standard of health and physique ; that only constables of five years' service were selected for the work; and that the statutory powers conferred on constables by section 30 of the Glasgow Police Act for the regulation of traffic

could not be poesessed by such exservice men, who were ineligible on account of age, unfitness, etc., to become members of the force. In the circumstances the committee decided to take no action in the matter.

Vuicans on Milk Distribution.

The .Warrington Co-operative Society has lately opened a new dairy equipped for the delivery of daily supplies of milk in bottles to its 24,000 members. Twenty, five boys and a similar number of "dandies," with seven milk floats, are employed. The milk is retailed in pint bottles made up into cases of twenties. Then the boys go on their rounds and are overtaken at various points by the drivers of 21-ton Vulcan lorries. The society has two such vehicles, with specially covered bodies, which are capable of carrying 70 cases or 1,400 bottles, from which the boys' stocks are replenished while the lads are actually on their rounds.

Petitioning for Buses.

An interesting example of the preference of the general public for motorbuses is reported from South Shields, where residents in the Frenchmen's Bay and surrounding districts, who are at present without means of transport, have addressed a petition to the South Shields Corporation asking it either to establish a municipal service, or to issue licences to private undertakings so that they can provide facilities. It is pointed out that the new coast road to Marsden provides an excellent route and that any service should prove a paying proposition, as the population of the neighbourhood is .increasing rapidly.

Bean Service.

Aluminium Casting Specialists.

The various classes of aluminium casting which Rowland Hill and Sons, Ltd., Albion Foundry, King Street, Coventry, is in a position to supply are clearly enumerated in a booklet entitled " Aluminium Castings" which the company has recently issued. Suitable space is given to the details of castings which are built for use on motor vehicles, these including crankcases, gearboxes, axle cases, pistons, radiator tanks. etc. The booklet contains several illustrations of sections of the company's works which give a good idea of their size and the nature of their equipment.
