DRIVERS of 38-tonners will still need to obtain phone permission to cross railway level crossings until the end of this year.
The Department of Transport has amended the traffic signs regulations so that the definition of abnormal loads lorries at level crossings is changed from 32.5 to 38 tonnes from January 1 next year.
From then on it will only be necessary to obtain authority to cross for vehicles over that weight.
