Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A COMMERCIAL vehicle show is to be staged by the Road Haulage Association at its Brighton conference next year, said RHA chairman John Silbermann, opening the 1978 RHA Conference on Tuesday.

He told delegates that the show would be designed as a shop window for Britain's hauliers.

"It will show how all that we consume and use, as well as the waste that modern society creates, is moved, to make life tolerable and even pleasant.

"It will show how industry and corrimerce rely almost entirely upon road transport to conduct their business and it will show the tremendous contributions that transport makes to earning, or saving, foreign currency; to speeding and facilitating exports and to maintain a British commercial vehicle industry," he said.

On membership, Mr Silbermann said that he thought the decline in the RHA's numbers had now "bottomed-out" and he thought that there were now grounds for optimism for the future.

Referring to the theme of the conference, "Hauliers great and small", Mr Silbermann said: "I am not saying anything new in appealing to all those in the business of professional road haulage — great or small — to share the work and the cost of representing our industry and protecting it against external onslaughts."

He said that the latest enterprise by RHA members, the ROADS co-operative in the Southern area was "commercially sensible in achieving the right prices and saving empty mileage and thus fuel." RHA's membership services committee was also moving towards new enteprises in encouraging the appointment of area field representatives to assist operators and to promote the benefits of joining to those who were not members.

On wages, he told delegates that the Association was fully aware of the need to cut the rate of inflation and it was essential that all concerned should approach negotiations on wages "with common sense, goodwill, and above all, moderation."
