PUBLIC relations chief Reginald Watts warned the Road Haulage Association that it must not underestimate the ability of pressure groups to get things done.

Mr Watts, UK head of Burston and Marstella, told the RHA's annual conference in Eastbourne on Tuesday that hauliers had to be prepared to go out and fight for the things they believed in.

"When you are trying to change attitudes, you must be out there fighting."

He said that the industry must be prepared to gear itself to appeal to universities and schools.

"It is those groups from. which environmentalists come. Look to your vehicles and yourselves as well, and look to your image.

"You can make your business as attractive as any other, but you must be out there fighting."

He added that hauliers must be prepared to learn the technique of the media and television to increase the public's level of knowledge of the industry.
