Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

LORRIES carrying oilrig supplies do similar work to ships' stores vehicles and should be given the same concessions from drivers' hours regulations, says the Freight Transport Association.

FTA Scottish secretary Gordon Dougall told a meeting in Perth last week that drivers of oilrig supply lorries should be entitled to extend their day from 121/2 to 14 hours.

He said: "High exploration and operating costs mean that emergency spares are called for at a moment's notice for immediate delivery and location and transportation of specialist parts and materials becomes an urgent and complicated exercise. "Because of this, the driver's day cannot be pre-planned and the major part can be spent awaiting the arrival of specialist spares or a delayed supply ship."

He called for the extended driving day as a means of helping operators meet the needs of the oil industry, especially as supply boats can be delayed easily by bad weather.

Mr Dougall added: "If the supply industries are to maintain efficient support for the offshore oil industry, it is important that the concessions are granted in order to help the UK-based supply industry meet the competition from its Continental counterparts."
