York Trailer Co Ltd, Yafforth Road, Northallerton, North Yorks THE MAIN exhibit here is the IB 36H Freightmaster frameless semi-trailer van plated for 36 ton gvw..

It is equipped with the Hobo suspension, also manufactured by York Trailer, and it can be used with a tandem axle for maximum weight loads and a single axle for part loads.

An overload protection valve is offered as part of the package which lowers the front axle if the rear exceeds the 10-ton limit. In the raised position the landing axle is locked hard against the chassis a full 180mm (7 in) clear of the ground.

ln anticipation of EEC legislation allowing an increase in maximum weight both axles are ; designed for loading of 11 tonnes.

The base frame ,is an allwelded construction incorporating I-beam cross-members at 304mm (12in) centres. Heavy: duty 1.63mm (1 6g) high-tensile aluminium alloy is used for the side walls while the roof consists of a single sheet of alloy which is bonded under tension to the roof bows and riveted to the cant rails outside the cargo area.

The rear door frame has slim pillars to match the interior width and height. The load area will accommodate two metric pallets side by side. Laminated hardwood 25mm (1 in) thick is used in the floor while the interior is fully lined in plywood. All steel components have been chemically pretreated against rust in York's Alchem plant.

In building the Fridgernaster, a frameless grp reefer, York has combined the use of the latest materials available. Two models are on offer, one for palletised loads and the other for carrying hanging meat.

The roof walls and front bulkhead are single sheets of polyurethane foam sandwiched between grp panels. An integral construction dispenses with the need for a chassis, saving up to 5cwt on more conventional designs.

Each side of each panel is vapour sealed to eliminate any ingress of moisture. In the event of damage to the panel moisture barriers are included,in the foam at 76mm (3in) centres.

All floor options are angled at the rear to minimise the risk of damage from fork trucks. Four hinges are provided for each of the rear doors and with container type cam locks racking is said to be eliminated.

The York LD 36 Curtainsider is based on the York Lo Deck chassis which has a shallow 203mm (Bin) double-thick ISO neck. The bodywork is not an add-on feature but forms an integral part of the trailer's con struction and a deep rear water repellent door frame gives extra rigidity. Protection against the elements is provided by York patented -drum tightcurtains.

Craven Tasker (Andover) Ltd, Sun Street, Woodville, Burton on Trent, Staffs

MAKING a first appearance at this year's NEC exhibition is a multi-axled 100-ton transporter module from Taskers of Andover.

The module consists of four lines of axles, each line consist ing of two oscillating axles of 14-ton capacity fitted with cam brakes and twin tyres. The axles are fitted on suspension arms with an hydraulic ram to compensate for load between the axles.

Total vertical height adjustment at each wheel is 600mm (23,6in).

The axles are pivoted for steering and they are connected to the steering assembly by mechanical linkage. A detachable drawbar and hydraulic steering rams make up the steering assembly, the ram being able to steer the axles, independently of the drawbar by means of a power pack controlled by a manual valve.

Michelin tyres are specified and the module is controlled by an air-cooled petrol engined power pack coupled to an hydraulic pump for steering and raising and lowering.

Another Tasker exhibit is the Tasklift Heavy low-loader de signed to carry concentrated loads up to 45 tons. An hydraulic Tasklift neck is fitted to the F6L857 semi-trailer. Lower bed length is 10.3m (34ft) including the beavertail at the rear and the

tandem-axle trailer is 2.89m (9.5ft wide) although it can be extended_ to 3. 5m (11 . 5f t)._by means of hinged side extensions.

The trailer has a detachable swan-neck and the loading ramps are counter-balanced for one-man operation. Next to the Tasklift is a 6.0m (20ft) skeletal chassis type approved by both

Holland and Belgium. This has a Euro neck depth of 168mm (65/sin) to assist with overall height limitations in these countries.

With technical features for Dutch type approval, Taskers have a flat platform, 12m (40ft)

trailer plated to 32 tons, ie a 12-ton kingpin and .-20-ton bogie. Rubery-Owen Roc,lwell widespread heavy-duty suspen

sion, EEC two-line braking and rubber mudflaps which are angled to prevent excess spray are some of its features.

A dry freight, side and end loading semi-trailer of 19.75 tons gross weight is shown which was designed to carry 840 crates of milk. Finished in Associated Dairies livery, this 9m (30ft) trailer has two tophung sliding doors on each side. These are held at the bottom by retaining clips which fold flush with the door when not in use. The body is of composite structure and has hinged rear doors which fold to the sIdes for loading.

Developed using the prin

ciples of the Taskold system is a five-section, pallet reefer van trailer, part of an order for Bacon Container Central. With a payload of 20 tonnes (19.7 tons) the vehicle has been built to include special requirements of Danish operation. Stainless steel is used for both exterior rear end frames. Inside grp linings jointed with silicone are sealed to withstand steam cleaning.

In addition to this reefer, a 12m (40ft) dry freight Taskvan which is plated for 32 tons is shown in TIP livery. This trailer has a double side-access door for ease of loading and unloading.

R. A. Dyson & Co Ltd, Grafton Street, Liverpool

THE Dyson 30-ton capacity Multi-Purpose Low Bed tandem-axle semi-trailer was initially designed to transport two armoured personnel carriers but is now, because of its robust construction, intended for operation in the Middle East.

A cranked frame chassis along with the main members is fabricated from high-tensile cross-members and outriggers.

The' lower deck and beaver tail fitted at the rear are covered in steel plate welded in place.

Loose equipment lockers are built into the top deck and a roller unit in the crank. Fastening rings and retractable twistlocks are also fitted.

Two fold over self-aligning loading ramps are fitted to the rear. The Dyson tandem-axle INV suspension is the inverted two-spring type with rubber lined end housings securing the springs to the 16-ton 152mm (Gin) diameter axles. The assemblies are fitted with longlife nylon bushes pivoting on hard-chrome plated oversize pins.

A greater capacity trailer, model 920 rated at 40 tons, is this stand's largest exhibit. It has been designed for carrying plant and machinery and so must take on site work in its stride. Here also the INV 2 spring suspension is fitted. A detachable front crank is hydraulically operated while a beaver tail is fitted for loading from the rear.

The third of the exhibits is described by Dyson as a 20-ton capacity lightweight semi-trailer chassis. A Boalloy Tautliner body of special Dyson design adds torsional stiffness and at the same time keeps the tare weight to the minimum. Air suspension running gear incorporates load sensing and a wide track.

M & G Trailers (Lye) Ltd, Hayes Lane, Lye, Stourbridge, West Midlands

SOMETHING completely new in tanker design can be seen on this stand.

It's a tanker with a body of glass reinforced polyester construction with six individual inner compartments each of 5,000 litres (1,100gal) capacity intended for use in the transport of food products, petrol or hazardous chemicals.

Each compartment has an earthing plate fitted adjacent to the footvalve, and other metal parts are connected to an earthing system of the ring main type. Six 4m (13ft) hose tubes are fitted with access doors at the rear. All air pipes and electric cables are carried in conduit located beneath the outer skin. No landing legs are fitted but instead it has jacking points in the base of the outer shell. A high yield steel rubbing plate, lOmm (4in) thick is also bonded into the outer shell.

The running gear consists of two 10 tons capacity Rubery Owen Rockwell axles with a three line air brake system. Supported by Rubery Owen Rockwell super 'M' series suspension, it is finished in Shell UK oil livery as an indication of the company's interest in it.

In addition to the road tanker, M & G are showing a 7m (23ft) tandem axle skeletal semi-trailer with four fixed ISO twistlocks for one 6m (20ft) container and a 12m (40ft) tandem axle semi-trailer fitted with a new idea in curtain sided bodywork.

399

Freight Bonallack Ltd, Liberator Road, Fifers Lane, Norwich, Norfolk

THE USE of grp marks a departure from convention for Freight Bonallack.

The company has taken advantage of this occasion to launch a new refrigerated grp composite van body, mounted on a rigid vehicle chassis. This follows the path set by the Freightervan, a dry freight body introduced earlier this year. Until then aluminium had been the major choice of material for construction. The new material simplifies manufacture with one-piece grp /plywood composite side walls and bulkhead containing 76mm (3in) of foam insulation. The floor consists of 19mm (0.75in) thick plywood boards overlaid with 5mm (0.2in) onepiece grp chequer-plate flooring.

Both the roof and the doors are made of a thinner but similar sandwich panel as used on the side walls. On this occasion the unit is mounted on a Ford 00710 chassis cab and is equipped with a Peters DFM refrigeration unit. It can be supplied in lengths from 3m to 8.5m (10ft to 28ft) to suit the customer's preference.

The dry Freightervan, introduced last August, was the first dry freight trailer from Freight Bonallack and is the only company to use a capped grp panel as protection against the ingress of water and eventual splitting.

Inside of the body features a purpose-built load retention system.

Running the full length of the body, mounting racks are fitted top and bottom of the side walls. into position to suit and locked into place by transverse shoring poles forming a framework which is said to be unaffected by any flexing of the panels.

The well established Coldsaver, here fitted out for meat carrying, is still using alloy panels on the outside, one-piece grp on the inside and 100mm (4in) of foam insulation between the two, but the doors have been constructed using the new grp 'plywood composite panels.

386

Crane Fruehauf Ltd, Hayes Gate House, Uxbridge Road, Middlesex COMPOSITE grp/foarnigrp vacuum filled panels with bracing strips running through the 78mm (3in) thick expanded polyurethane foam core are used in the construction of ,a new grp reefer van semi-trailer manufactured by Crane Fruehauf.

This forming allows CF to save 25mm (I in) in depth of sidewall insulation over its existing aluminium reefer van without reducing thermal ternal width to 2.36m (7ft 71/2in). However, the front wall is insulated using a 100mm (4in) foam panel and the floor with 96mm (3.75in) of block foam.

The roof construction has no meat rail hangers. Instead the rails are bolted directly through reinforced support beams. This design has allowed a one-piece grp roof sheet to be used inter nally with an external one-piece roof sheet of aluminium forming a cavity which is filled to a depth of 136mm (5.25in) expanded polyurethane foam.

In this chassisless design particular attention has been paid to strengthening up the front end by incorporating a deep section front wall with substantial steel corner posts. New one-piece non-stick door seals are an improvement on the convoluted type previously used.

Another temperature controlled vehicle amongst the 12 exhibits to be seen on this stand includes a rigid 6m (201t) refrigerated body on a Chrysler chassis.

Two types of the skeletal S K80 trailer with a strengthened integral bolster configuration are available, type 1 for carrying one 6m (20ft) container and type 10 for carrying either two 6m (2 Oft) containers, one 12m (40ft) container or one 9m (30ft) container.

Other exhibits include a 12m (40ft) dry freight aluminium van semi-trailer, an 11m (36ft) tanker semi-trailer and 45-tonne payload low deck semi-trailer manufactured to overseas specification. • In the recovery vehicle range three vehicles are shown. A twin-boom 750 wrecker mounted on a Foden Super Haulrnaster chassis for the rec covery of fully laden commercial vehicles, a 16-ton rated twinboom 600 wrecker on a Mercedes-Benz 1621 chassis, and for light vehicle recovery a 4-ton capacity Cadet 1,000 on a Ford Transit 190 chassis.

The stand also includes exhibits from the Crane Frue hauf subsidiary Pengco De mountable Equipment, incorporating a new air suspension which has a flexible monoleaf spring replacing the former solid l-section trailing arm. This is in continuous operation throughout the show.
