Developed specifically for motorway express services, the current Midland Red CM.6 coach has a maximum speed of about 80 mph and cruises comfortably at 70 mph. The 10.5 litre six-cylinder diesel engine develops 165 bhp and power is transmitted through a semi-automatic five-speed overdrive gearbox. The vehicle has a length of 36ft and a width of 8ft COMMERCIAL MOTOR road-tested the original Midland Red CM.5 motorway coach (CM, 27 November, 1959). Its engine was an 8 litre turbocharged unit developing 130 bhp and power was transmitted through a David Brown five-speed overdrive constant-mesh gearbox. Top speed was approximately 76 mph. Length of the coach was 35ft and width 8ft.
