They Have a Lot to Learn.

The Chiefs of Police of the cities of Paris, Berlin and St. Petersburg, are all shortly to spend some time in London studying the methods by which the City of London and the Metropolitan police control the traffic of the Metropolis. The Paris chief, M. Lepine, should make his stay a long one-he has such a lot to learn on the subject.

New Brillies for Paris.

A fortnight ago we recorded the placing of an order by the new Paris motorbus coneessionnaires for 250 de Dion chassis. The other model with which this company is to commence operations is a modified SchneiderBrillie ; we understand that the principal constructional modification consists of the abandonment of the Brillid type of perch bar ; the drive on the new machines is to be taken through the rear springs.

A " R espe c t able " Company.

The London Road Car Co., Ltd., has successfully sustained an appeal, before the Court of Appeal, against a judgment, in a lower court, by Mr. Justice Neville, that a breach of contract had been made, in that certain premises, which had been let to the Road Car Co., Ltd., had been transferred, without the original owner's consent, to the London General Omnibus Co. The owner of the property maintained that the words " a respectable and responsible person " did not include a limited company; the original lease agreement set forth that no transfer of the premises was to he made to any other person without the consent of the original owner, but it was also stipulated that such consent should not be withheld in respect of any " respectable and responsible person." The Court of Appeal has thus decided that technically the L.G_O. Co.. Ltd., is" a respectable person."

We reproduce below a small diagrammatic poster, which is being used by the Metropolitan Steam Omnibus Co., Ltd., -to draw attention to a new circular route.

The Burning Question.

The chairmen of several motorbus companies dined at the R.A.C. last night, and they afterwards took part in the discussion upon Mr. Shra, pnell Smith's paper, entitled " Motorbus or Electric Tramcar?" which was originally contributed to the Brussels Congress in August last.

All Cars Stop Here.

The Newcastle Lieudi has fined a taxicab driver who accidentally knocked down a lady who, it was stated in evidence, endeavoured to alight from a tramcar without looking in the right direction. Witnesses stated that the cab driver was moving slowly, that he used all care, and that the injured lady hesitated. This danger, of course, is always present with ordinary tramcars, which discharge their passengers in the middle of the road, amongst all the other traffic, but not with motorbuses.

Effective Competition.

The motorbus competition from London to Bromley, Kent, has resulted in the discontinuance of further trains on the S.E. ,and C.R. service from Charing Cross to that district, notwithstanding that cut fares have, for 901110 time, been in operation on Sundays. The local agitation for third-class railway season tickets has borne no fruit

• ' Commer-Car " make have recently been ordered from Commercial Cars, Ltd., of Luton and London, as follow five double-deck omnibuses for Constantinople; one '23-seated char-4banes for the L. and N.W.R.; a series (details not communicated) for the Australian market.

Poplar Urges Splashguards. The General Purposes Committee, of Poplar Borough Council, has written to the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in regard to a recent communication from him in which it was stated that, as a result of the tests that had been made of the only splashguard for motor omnibuses which had been submitted to him, he did not feel justified in requiring proprietors of motor omnibuses to incur the heavy expense (probably from £8 to .CID per annum) that would be entailed in fitting guards to their vehicles. The committee writes that at, least two effective splashguards had been offered which could be adopted at mlieh less cost than that quoted in the Commissioner's letter, and it urges that the splashing from motor onmihu.,es in wet weather is becoming an nuisonee.

Fire-Brigade Matters.

Testimony to the Argyll.

Argylls, Ltd., has received the following testimonial from the Dundee Firemaster " It gives me very great pleasure to inform you that we have now had the Argyll motor fire-tender for two years; the cost for that period has been less than £30. We have only once been knocked out of action ' going to a fire owing to a sideslip, which was no fault of the machine. The machine to-day is in splendid working condition. This recurd is for a hilly centre. Tottenham U.D.C.

The Fire Brigade Committee of Tottenham U.D.C., reports having authorized the Superintendent to proceed with alterations to enable the motor fire-escape to carry a hand escape in lieu of that now fitted to the a pplia rice. The Committee states that the existing motor escape re(lures four men to manipulate it. whereas, when the alteration is effeetc71. two men will suffice. new-type, Lacre char-a•-bancs.
