A Novel Form of Sparking Plug.

Of the making of sparking plugs there seems to be iiic .end, and of the many new patterns, which, in the course of a year, are brought to our notice, there are. as a rule, hut few for which ally considerable claim of novelty can he „sustained. We have recently, however, been subjecting to a comprehensive test a plug which certainly embodies verydistinetive characteristics. This speciality is known as Mascot," and it is now being manufactured by the -Mascot Co., of Rugby, who, mitt' some degree of authority, claim to be knoen as sparking-plug specialists. The company owes its inception to the enterprise of Mr. Bernard _Hoppe, whose name is familiar to many of those whose interests are those of the commercial-motor-vehicle world. Mr. Hopps was, for a long while, in charge of the petrolelectric-vehicle experiments of the British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., and it is unnevessary for us to remind many of our readers that he is an electrician of no mean capabilities. Suffice it to say, that he has turned the whole of his expert knowledge to work on what to many of us would seem to he a. simple problem, viz., the production of an entirely-satisfectory high-tension sparking plug. Mr. Hopps is the first to confess that the problem has proved to he by no means so simple as it looked. He has, however, after many months of close application, as the Yankees say, " made good," and the result is the Mascot plug, which to-day is being supplied in very-considerable quantities to a large proportion of the makers of pleasure-cars in this country. The Mascot is, moreover, just beginning to win its way into the favours of commercial-vehicle makers and users, including motorcab owners.

The sectional drawing. Muhl we reproduce herewith, is self-explanatory, and there is no need for us to indulge in further description of its construction. The enamel packing is. of course, the special feature which is making a name for the plug, but, in addition. we can personally testify to the excellence and accuracy of the workmanship throughout. We have had a set of four on a_ large en' since :filly. and, although this machine has been in veryhard work for the whole of that time, we have not yet had the plugs out. The Mascot is not a cheap plug, neither is it a nasty plug, so that it is " cheoper in the end,"
