Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SCANIA (GREAT BRITAIN) has written to CM expressing concerns over third-party vehicle conversions following our recent fuel test of a Scania tractor equipped with the GSPK diesel/ LPG dual-fuel system ('Replacement thinking', CM 30 October, pictured right).

The Swedish truck-maker says: "While Scania has neither tested GSPK's technology nor been privy to its research or development, a number of similar technologies have come to our attention which have raised concerns ranging from health and safety through to additional operational costs and potential component damage within customers' vehicles, and ultimately with regard to the law."

It adds that while the fitment of any third-party technology "does not nullity the manufacturer's warranty, any primary or consequential problem that may be attributed to the added technology would always be at the operator's own risk".

Scania says it has "concerns over the shortand long-term effects such technologies may be having on the engine. We are seeing a growing number of incidents whereby it is believed the washing effect of LPG entering the engine has removed some of the critical lubrication, leading to excessive wear and subsequent failure of components,"

• For Scania's letter in full, plus GSPK's response, see page 19.
