by Bill Brock • After a two-year, two-millionmile development programme, Dunlop's Smart tyre is starting fleet field trials. It uses an integral transponder to transmit data up to 3.0m to a fixed or hand-held scanner. With a fiveyear battery the transponder weighs 60g but it's mounted opposite and counteracted by the carcase overlap, so wheel balance is unaffected. As well as letting the driver know if an individual tyre needs attention, the scanner records the tyre's identity, mileage, minimum and maximum temperature plus the date and time.

The resulting data should help operators select the best tyres for recycling and specialist steer or drive axle tyres can be reused in their appropriate position, instead of being relegated to the trailer.
