• Scania GB is furious with 13T after its head office telephones went down for nearly a week, leaving the company reliant on employees' mobile phones and six fax lines.

Dealers and customers first experienced trouble contacting Milton Keynes on Thursday 6 November. Connections were still unreliable two weeks later.

"Callers were getting the engaged tone," says a spokeswoman. "They were eventually made aware of the fault by HI operators, but Scania has not been pleased with the speed of response from BT."

The problem was traced to the flooding of unsealed cables, which reoccurred

during repair. The company had just one main connection into its telephone exchange.

Six fax lines were salvaged over the weekend for parts orders, and the company had four Cable & Wireless connections for out-going calls.

"BT offered us no alternatives—the phones couldn't even be redirected," says the spokeswoman.

"We hope and trust that no one has been too inconvenienced during this period," she says.

Scania is now equipping itself with multiple phone inputs to prevent another communications catastrophe. It will also be seeking compensation from BT.
