IN CANADA, as in the United States, the "heavy truck market is rotten and auto production is at rock bottom". This is the conclusion of Joseph Phillippi, vice-president of reseach at analysts Dean Witter Reynolds of New York. However, he says that the light-duty vehicle market is getting better.
"The principal reason," he says, "is that the domestic vehicle manufacturers are becoming more competitive with the Japanese in the light truck market."
The General Motors S10 is one example.
