IN 1975 THE GERMAN Public Transport Association and the Association of the Motor Industry persuaded the Ministry of Transport to commission and fund a study into the concept of a comprehensive bus transit system.
Much of the hardware which has since emerged as part of the overall planning (such as rearengined pusher buses, novel dual-mode vehicles, guideaway operations is sufficiently well known and, in some instances, in regular operation).
The eight-volumed findings of the study were subsequently analysed and condensed into a definitive textbook published in 1979, and so great has been the demand for access to the German material by other countries, not only in Europe but overseas, that an English translation has now been completed and published by Alba Verlag, of Dasseldorf. The English version, sponsored and financed by the public transport division of MAN, is of particular value in bringing together such diverse matters as road layout and construction for bus use, bus stop and terminal design and fare collection systems and operating practice.
In addition it has a wealth of information on vehicle dimensions, technical requirements and legal constraints.
The book also examines alternative fuel and propulsion systems for public transport as well as new technology in energy conservation and transmission practice. Guideway systems are covered, and no less than nine pages are devoted to the importance of design, siting and equipment of road service transfer points for passengers whose journeys call for a change of vehicle.
