DAVE WETZEL, the distinguished clown and chairman of the Greater London Council Transport Committee, displayed simian qualities when he tried to make a monkey out of John Cheeseman, the South west London stipendiary magistrate. He was alleged to have attempted to avoid paying his fare on the Underground during the controversy over London Transport fares.
After an incomprehensible outburst he was told by the magistrate to behave like an adult. At this he put his hands under his armpits and jumped up and down like an ape.
Wetzel and others were remanded until January 6. As this will be Twelfth Night, he may well appear in court in yellow stockings and crossed garters.
