GREATER MANCHESTER Transport has replaced the standard 4.5 litre engine in one of its Seddon midibuses with diesel electric power.
The diesel electric power pack consists of a Hatz three-cylinder air-cooled diesel engine coupled to a motor/generator set connected to two large battery packs.
Running at 2,000rpm, the Hatz engine is simultaneously a hydraulic pump and a motor/generator unit. The bus is driven through a hydraulic pump linked to its conventional back axle.
The engine runs continuously at 2,000rpm, whether the bus is moving or still as long as the batteries require charging. When the batteries are fully charged the engine reverts to tick-over speed.
The "hybrid" Seddon is expected to enter service shortly on the GMT service linking the two main Manchester rail terminals at Victoria and Piccadilly.
