THE BUS AND COACH Council's Future of the Bus campaign is under way, and has had a mixed response so far.

It was presented to Transport Secretary David Howell on Wednesday last week, and he commented immediately afterwards that there was much in it which coincided with his way of thinking.

It also was welcomed "unreservedly" by Shadow Transport Secretary Albert Booth, "greatly" welcomed by leading Social Democrat William Rodgers, a former Labour Transport Secretary, and pro-road Conservative MP Peter Fry said the document "should be required reading for all those who believe that one of our essential freedoms is freedom of movement."

At a press conference last Wednesday, BCC spokesmen studiously avoided all attempts to discuss the Transport Bill, much of which is contrary to the spirit of the campaign, and one revealed afterwards that this was a policy decision by BCC.

National Press coverage of the campaign launch has been thin, but an advertising campaign started this week has taken up more newspaper space.
