GEORGE CARRUTHERS, deputy chief executive of the National Bus Company, will be retiring from full-time employment on December 31.

He has been elected vice president of the Bus and Coach Council, but will also retain a number of directorships of NBC subsidiary and associated companies.

As a result of his semi-retirement, Irwin Dalton, member for personnel services, will be responsible to Robert Brook, deputy chairman and chief executive, for the public affairs, planning, marketing and research, management services and consultancy departments.

Tony Beetham, group executive of corporate affairs, takes over as executive director of planning and corporate affairs.

Peter Hunt, currently general manager of Hants and Dorset Motor Services, will become executive director of public affairs.

Mr Carruthers joined Eastern Counties Omnibus in 1946 as a trainee, subsequently holding various traffic positions.

In 1960 he became traffic manager of Wilts and Dorset Motor Services and then assistant general manager of both that company and Hants and Dorset when they merged in 1964.

He moved to United Welsh Services at Swansea in 1967 as director and general manager. This was followed by directorships of other bus companies in South Wales on the formation of NBC.

In 1973 he was appointed group executive responsible for public relations and manpower, becoming director of manpower in 1974. During 1979 he became executive member for personnel services and in April 1981 became deputy chief executive.

Mr Dalton joined the bus industry in 1962 as assistant corn pany secretary of the West Riding Automobile Company. He has held various positions since: regional director of NBC's southern region in January 1977 and was made executive member in April 1981, assuming responsibilities of member for personnel services in May 1981.

Mr Hunt joined Potteries Motor Traction in 1964 as traffic manager and became general manager of Yorkshire Traction in 1968.
