S Ely to close its doors
joanna.hourkocarbi.co.uk FAMILY-RUN BIRMINGHAM firm Roy S Ely Transport is to close with the loss of 10 jobs, after failing to replace the business lost when its key customer LDV collapsed last year.
The Nechells, Birmingham-based business, which has run for 41 years, will cease operations before Saturday 29 May when it auctions off its 12 remaining HGVs at its yard. MD Roy Fly savs:"I'm at retirement age and we have been making losses over the past few months, so I really felt now was the right time to get out of the industry. It's a hard market and there's too many hauliers out there fighting for the same work."
LDV's administration last year also hit the firm hard. Fly adds: -The whole uncertainty surrounding whether LDV would be salvaged or acquired was a nightmare. One minute we were told a buyer had been found, the next that the company had folded. We had 12 trucks dedicated to our 20-year-old partnership with LDV, so not only have we lost work, but we were owed a lot of money by it."
Ely started the firm with one lorry and at its peak it ran 32 HOVs. Fly says that although he looked to sell the operation, he was unable to find a buyer.
