E Humberside-based Matthews European has ceased trading after 27 years, blaming rising fuel costs coupled with falling rates:16 drivers have been made redundant.
Earlier this month receiver Ernst & Young was appointed to take over the affairs of the Newport, enough company, which ceased trading at the end of April. Matthews, which was run by directors Kenneth and Julie Matthews, operated 16 trucks on international general haulage.
A spokesman for the firm says the general economic climate within the industry is to blame. "There will be lots more in the coming weeks," he adds. 'We watched fuel costs rise as ferry costs rose; VED went up and rates came down."
No one at Ernst & Young was available for comment.
