• Drivers at BOC, Lex Transfleet and Christian Salvesen are to keep their jobs after Exel Logistics and the Tibbett & Britten Group won what is believed to be the biggest ever joint contract between two fleet operators in the retail sector.
The five-year, £100m deal means Exel Logistics and the Tibbett & Britten Group take over from BOG, Lex Transfleet and Christian Salvesen the transport of M&S general merchandise throughout the UK and the Irish Republic.
The new contract is to be operated by a joint venture company, Joint Retail Logistics, which will trade as an operating company, with each partner owning 50%.
Under the deal, all BOG. Lex Transfleet and Christian Salvesen vehicles now engaged in M&S work will be transferred to Joint Retail Logistics. When Joint Retail Logistics starts up in June it will operate a fleet of 300 CVs and 700 trailers from 14 distribution centres. The business will be based in Coventry.
A T&B Group spokesman says the idea of taking on the M&S contract had been initiated by both Tibbett and Exel. 'We are the largest two contractors working for Marks and Spencer. This contract represents an increase of revenue of between 10 and 20% for the Tibbett & Britten Group and Exel Logistics," he adds.
According to an Exel Logistics spokesman, the BOG, Lex Transfleet and Christian Salvesen vehicles will be repainted in the Joint Retail Logistics livery, and all 145 staff, including warehouse staff and drivers, will be kept on.
