Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• On-board vehicle diagnostic systems could be used in future annual commercial vehicle testing according to Department of Transport chief mechanical engineer Eric Dunn.

At the IRTE's annual conference last week Dunn said: "Electronics are now opening up possibilities for the near future and on-board diagnostics will soon play a very significant part in vehicle maintenance. I would hope that in the long run they would play a part in roadworthiness testing.

"We ought to be able to use what is built into the vehicle in order to be reassured that the safety and to some extent the emission performance of the vehicle is being maintained".

Dunn insists that the use of any built-in diagnostic system must not extend the time allowed for annual testing. Vehicle Inspec torate deputy chief executive and operations director Julian David recognises the potential of built-in diagnostic systems but adds: "It would take a lot of work to harmonise the systems already used by manufacturers and equipment supplies".
