Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Engine compression brake manufacturer Jacobs plans to launch an exhaust brake in Europe later this year called the Xtarder. It will suit medium duty diesels, including the Cummins B and C Series, Caterpillar 3116 and Perkins Phaser.

The butterfly-type valve brake is claimed to offer up to 10% more braking efficiency that current exhaust brakes, thanks to a specially developed orifice in the valve plate which ensures optimum back pressure.

According to business development department director Robert Perkins, Jacobs wants to set up a joint development project with a European truck maker for a new heavy truck compression engine brake: "We have had significant conversations with non-Germanic manufacturers. If all goes well a development programme could be started next year," he says.

Jacobs already offers a compression brake for the Volvo 12-litre straight-six, but it will not develop this model for the new 12.7-litre Volvo engine.

Renault is an obvious contender for a partnership, although it is unclear which engine would be used.
