THE first consignment of a L200,000 1 fleet of dump truck chassis from Leyland Motors, Ltd., is now going into operation on South American roads. Ordered by the Ministry of Public Works of Venezuela, the fleet will comprise 80 Leyland Super Comet short-wheelbase trucks with six-speed gearboxes and two-speed rear axles. The chassis are being shipped to Caracas, where they are fitted with body work and twin-ram tipping gear by Ensamblaje Superior, C.A. The last consignment is expected to be shipped in July. Continuing demand for fourand sixwheeled trucks for the home market is reported by Albion Motors, Ltd. Their orders books have reached record levels since the introduction of new models some 15 months ago. Recent orders from 13 operators total. 124 vehicles of which 46 are Riever light six-wheelers.
NEW 15-SPEED GEARBOXES BY FULLER
TWQ gearboxes have new gearbove been introduced in the U.S.A. by theFuller Manufacturing Co., Kalamazoo, Michigan, and both units give a total of 15 different gear ratios. Unlike the 10speed Road Ranger boxes, however, these new models have two gear levers, one of which controls the five-speed main section and the other the three-speed auxiliary box which is mounted in unit with it. Both gearboxes give two overdrive ratios-0.636 and 0.844 to 1—and with one unit the lowest available ratio is 17.27 to 1, that of the other box being 13.67 to I. For normal use on roads the two upper ratios only of the auxiliary sections are used, whilst the ultra-low auxiliary ratios are primarily for off-theroad operation. Another recent change affecting certain Fuller gearboxes is that some of the fivespeed models are now manufactured with effect aluminium-alloy cases. These effe a weight saving of 93 lb. compared to the cast-iron cases used previously and reflect the increasing use of light alloy in U.S, vehicles.
