• The Drivers Action Movement has appointed Labour MP Keith Hill as honorary president. Hill was voted in at a meeting last weekend when the group also agreed to apply for charitable status.
As a charity DAM will be able to obtain greater funding for its campaigns to improve drivers rights and public safety, says secretary Jack Crossfield.
DAM plans a number of campaigns for 1997, including: • Going to the European Court of Justice over the UK's refusal to renew the licences of drivers who take insulin for diabetes; • Companies employing drivers on benefit; • The unfair treatment of UK drivers in foreign disputes.
DAM, formed in 1994, has about 1,400 members throughout the UK.
