• Britain has scuppered an Irish bid for a 35% rebate on the Eurovignette, which gives access to motorways in the Benelux countries, Denmark and Germany.
At a Brussels EU transport ministers meeting Ireland, Greece and Portugal argued that because they are on the outer rim of the EC they are entitled to preferential treatment.
British Transport Minister Viscount Goschen replied that Aberdeen was further away from the EU's economic centre than Galway. Luxembourg Transport Minister Madi DelvauxStehres said that if rebates were granted to all those who considered themselves as peripheral, Luxembourg hauliers would be the only ones to pay the full price for their vignettes.
